MeepWorld's Long History

I've owned and ran my own minecraft server in one form or another since early 2013, there have been many ups and downs along the way, many friends made and lost; and lots of good times and awesome creations. People tend to play on a map for only so long before they feel they can't make any more progress, and because or this, or other, more unfortunate events there have been several versions of meepworld. Whilst the map, server address and even many of the players have changed over MeepWorld's almost 5 year lifetime, it still has the same aim; to just help everyone have a bit of good fun with friends.

Pre-MeepWorld Era (2013-October 2014)

Sometime in early 2013 I bought my first Minecraft server, just a tiny vanilla one for me and a few friends, all I remember is that I built a tree house. It was was then changed to run some early version of Tekkit and I built a small factory compound.

Later, Maybe late 2013 there was another personal server. I believe this when minecraft 1.6 had just come out and donkeys and horses were new. I remember I made a tiny cottage on a small island and had a pet donkey.

First Public Server

After that I opened my first public server, I don’t remember much about it but do have a few pictures. Everyone had their house on a main road  going past spawn and we build a huge shopping mall.

This was later closed and I then had several small private worlds for me and friends set up on the same server, around 2014 and Minecraft 1.8.

MeepWorld 1 (October 1st 2014 – March 7th 2015)

This was the first iteration of a MeepWorld Public Minecraft server and ran Minecraft 1.8. This marked the start of my Twitch career, with my first ever stream being me opening the server and getting a few people to come on and join me. We built a small player village near spawn and me and several other people spent a few hours building a small manor house from start to finish.

A few days later the server was re-created as it was crashing a bit and sadly the IP address changed, so we lost a few players. Over its lifetime it was upgraded several times from just 256MB to 1GB, but when the hosting company raised their prices I couldn't afford a server with them anymore and started Meepworld 2 with a different one.

Meepworld 2 (March 7th 2015 - March 3rd 2016)

I started a new public server, still running mc 1.8. It initially had 512MB of ram. This time the server had a big, walled spawn built in creative mode with plots where people could create shops and houses. It had loads of plugins and most of the time we just built stuff in creative mode and cheated stuff in, it was very different from the strictly legitimate vanilla survival we have on MeepWorld today.

Over the year I played on this server I built 3 different bases, starting with a big walled citadel, I got bored of that and moved on to build a modern town in a strange flat area that spawned due to map corruption, I got bored of that too and then went and started making a medieval kingdom right on the other side of the map.

This server also had quite a few ram upgrades and the IP did change a couple times and the server had to be recreated more than once, then in December 2015 the server completely died when the machine it was running on broke. The hosts did eventually get it back up and running again but it was never the same, so the server lay empty over Christmas of 2015 and the map today is still in a Christmas state. I decided to revive MeepWorld by resetting the server, choosing to update it to the just released Minecraft 1.9 and stick with Vanilla.

MeepWorld 3 (3rd March 2016 – 12th of June 2017)

The 3rd version of a ‘MeepWorld Public Minecraft server stared with 1GB ram and Minecraft 1.9, still with the IP address of MeepWorld 2. It was created because MeepWorld 2 had become abandoned, had a pretty full map, and was over complicated with plugins. Because of this I decided to keep it a mostly vanilla experience.

Sometime later it was updated to Minecraft 1.10 when it came out and again for 1.11,  then 1.11.2 before falling into disuse as people got bored, running out of things to do after over 15 months of play on the same world.

MeepWorld 4 (12th of June 2017 — 19th of September 2017)

Meepworld 3 unfortunately fell into disuse, and in June 2017 meep reset the server starting with a blank world for the 1.12 ‘World of Colour’ update. It kept the same ethos as the last one, being simple and easy vanilla survival with the grief-prevention plugin. From that point the server grew during the Australian school holidays and for a couple of days had up to 11 people on at once.

In early August of 2017 the server was moved around a bit onto a new machine to fix the frequent random crashing issue that had plagued it since its conception, some fiddling was done and now it was running on 6GB of ram. After Crashing due to the hosting company being terrible, Meepworld 4 was down for 2 weeks, meep finally got it back up again but the map had to be rolled back by about two weeks, because of this nobody wanted to play anymore and it was decided that there would be a new world, and with a different host. This marked the beginning of a time of troubles for Meepworld.

MeepWorld 5 (19th September 2017 – 15th of January 2018)

This was the ill-fated fix/new beginning for MeepWorld, attempting to move away from the days of crashing and map corruption with the old host. It ran 1.12.1 (later updated to 1.12.2). This world/server was very short lived and did not work to fix the issues that MeepWorld had been having previously. The server proved to be laggy and often crashed, however it was quite fun whist it lasted.

My friend D and I started work on a huge modern city, the desert next to spawn became filled with epic towns and pyramids, and then there was the whole Cuba island land wars territory saga. Due to the lag meep moved the world a different server but many players had left already and it still had poor reliability, thus the server became abandoned once more and meep declared it officially closed soon after.

Meepworld 6 (15th January 2018 – 29th January 2019)

After going on holiday for two weeks in Japan, meep decided to try to finally fix the issues with MeepWorld once and for all, aspiring for no more map resets due to abandoned servers and poor performance such as crashing and lag. To achieve this he cancelled the server and ordered a new one from a different company, starting with 2GB ram and 1.12.2. After inviting D on to help get things set up, a small spawn was built in preparation for the official relaunch of MeepWorld, some public farms, a help centre, a nether portal, and a mine were also established before launch.

I officially re-opened the server to the MeepWorld community and began promoting it on PMC and MC Forum once more in order to introduce new players. This went well with many previous community members returning to the server in the first day. This went on for a year or so with many people on and enjoying themselves before again, they had had enough and done enough with the existing world and wanted a new one, by then it was running 1.13.2.

MeepWorld 7 (29th January 2019 – 22nd March 2020)

Following requests for a map reset I set up a new world in the just released 1.14 snapshots. Our player base grew and lots of interesting and impressive bases began to take shape over the six months till official release. There were several issues with griefing as no plugins to stop this were yet available, the server was just using vanilla with the snapshots. Due to this it died down a bit but when all the plugins were out and we could say it was fully ready to play, things went back to normal and there were a lot of people on often, having lots of fun. This map lasted the rest of the year till once again people understandably grew tired of playing the same game and world for a long time and wanted something new again. Lots of cool things were created such as a panda temple, awesome spawn village, community food gardens, several awesome big bases and mega highways. Due to this demand for a fresh world to enjoy a new world was prepared early march 2020 and when complete the server was switched over soon after.

Updated as of 22/03/20, will add in the rest up to 2021 when I feel like it.
